You know God wants it to be easier to drink on Sundays

It’s supposed to be a day of rest, isn’t it?

Which is why this is such good news:  Minnesota among states looking at liquor sales changes to boost tax revenue.

This sentence in the Minnpost article makes it sound like you can’t buy liquor on election day: “Other states — including Utah (but not us) — are considering allowing the sale of liquor on Election Day…”  Of course, that’s not the case.  But speaking of bizarre liquor laws, this kind of makes me want to move to South Carolina:

South Carolina: All malt beverages containing not more than 5% alcohol by weight and all wines containing not more than 21% alcohol by volume “are declared to be nonalcoholic and nonintoxicating.” (S.C. Admin. Code § 61-4-10.) (http://www.prohibitionrepeal.com/legacy/hall.asp)

“No officer, I can’t be drunk!  I had 36 beers, but they were all nonalcoholic!”

Mugging, part II

January 27th, 2009

[I will likely post on this incident several times in the near future.  So, my apologies.  There may end up being a post about the Minneapolis PD catching the villain.  More on that later.]

When people get their shit stolen, a common refrain is, “it not the X, it’s the Y,” where X=things of monetary value and Y=things of social, sentimental, emotional value.  I may speak more on the both the monetary and non-monetary losses later, but for now I want to lament the loss of something seemingly sort of silly, but that kind of meant a lot to me.  My old text messages.

Mostly, I liked my old phone, but it was obnoxious that it would only save 50 received text messages.  I hated that, and had to delete messages all the time to make room for new ones.  But that meant that that phone contained about 40 of my favorite text messages from friends, family and girlfriends from the last 3 1/2 years.  I actually would, on occasion, go through old text messages and reminisce.  So, for my and your benefit, some of those that I can recall are below.  Some of these may be a little personal, but that should not be evident, as there is no useful context.

Jesus is the reason.

Drizzidy Drunk.

Part Uno: [text redacted]

Part Dos: [again, redacted]

Oh, I’m sure that’s WAY more important.  I’ll let the queen know.

Just take the turnpike, it’s the fastest route

STOP BOWLING.

Well, come run into me.

When you want to rendezvous?

Stop it, you’re supposed to be HELPING.

With any luck, more will follow as I remember them.  Also, these are probably a lot less entertaining without context.  Sorry.

Fuck muggers, you cowardly and worthless, God damned, pieces of shit

I hate the fact that I kind of want to get a conceal-and-carry permit.  I never will, but still.  Thought’s there.

That is all.

Things I Like

January 18th, 2009

My Friends:
-Who knows how many more times I’ll be able to tap her for accompaniment to weddings, but everyone needs to have a friend with whom you can properly deal with homilies that reference people’s confusion over the legality of human-canine unions.

-They tell me things I need to know, i.e., a rare but spot-on recommendation from one to listen to a band (Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles), even if I mostly ignored it until months later.

-They give me things I need to have, like lots and lots of music (including LM and the VLs), even if I don’t necessarily listen to that music until months later.

-Again with the things I need to know: informing me of a late night performance by Ms. Michelle and her Lapelles at the Dakota, which I did attend and thus deepened my love for Lucy. A pretty big crowd showed up at 11:30 to hear them play a fantastic show that included covers of the Bear Necessities and Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right. Yup. Jungle Book and Bob Dylan.

My City:
-It may be very cold, but Minneapolis is the birthplace and/or home of some things that I like, namely the several times aforementioned Lucy, et al and the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant.

Jesus Books:
-No, not like this, like this and this.

Coffee Shops:
-More specifically having the leisure, albeit briefly, to spend 4 hours in one doing things like this.

Let’s try this again, shall we?

About a week shy of the three month mark from my last posting, I’m going to try again. But classes start in two (2) days, so I fully intend to be foiled again. I’m not any good at this kind of thing, but I need an “outlet,” as they say. So, here goes:

Freeway Bikers

I was pretty excited when the new 35W Bridge opened. As an urban planning student, there are a lot of interesting implications regarding the collapse and subsequent funding and construction of a major route through Minneapolis. As a Minneapolis resident, it was important for my commute. And I was excited to cross it for the first time.

I’m also a biker and have spent a fair amount of time looking at the bridge from the adjacent 10th Avenue Bridge. Sure, it would have been cool to bike across it, but common sense (and something about laws) has prevented me from doing so. So I was a bit surprised and amused to see two people turn onto the entrance ramp to southbound 35W at University Avenue last night. And what makes it better was that they appeared to be responsible (though silly looking) adults with helmets and lights, both riding one of these:
